Your shot at a sub-RM 150k EV with 420 km range? BYD Atto 3 spied in Malaysia ahead of launch

This here is the ‘Game Changer’ or formally known as the BYD Atto 3 EV. Launching in Malaysia ‘soon’, this pure electric SUV was spied by WapCar reader Young in Klang.

More recently, you may recognise the name as the car that got Thais queueing up outside its dealership. Crazy times.

In Malaysia, whether or not it’ll draw crowds like the latest iPhone still hangs in the balance, as most details – just like this particular unit – are still under wraps. Everywhere else the Atto 3 has been priced very competitively, so perhaps that’s a good precedent to things.

The BYD Atto 3 is priced from THB 1,199,900 (circa RM 146k) in Thailand, making it very competitive. It’s cheaper than the MG ZS EV (THB 1,269,900, or circa RM 163k), after subsidies and tax cuts in the Kingdom.

As tightly-wrapped as the camouflage may be, it’s a very teasy one. We can make out the model by the silhouettes of the rear light bar, but the main giveaway are its two-toned, machine-finished five-spoke wheels.

The Atto 3 is one of two confirmed launches when the company officially opens its doors here, in partnership with Sime Darby Motors. Pairing it will be the BYD e6 EV MPV; that one we’ve covered in detail before in this post albeit that was a Singapore-spec car.

Specification and origin for our local market is still yet to be confirmed, but it’s reasonable to expect the company’s Thailand plant to be part of their regional supply chain. Our northern neighbours sell the Atto 3 in only one spec – the Extended Range, which gives a WLTP-rated range of 420 km from its 60.48 kWh battery.

Power comes from a front-mounted electric motor, good for 204 PS and 310 Nm of torque. As for charging, it has a Type 2 connector for AC charging (up to 6.6 kW) and the 80kW DC – CCS 2 connector. It also has Vehicle to Load (V2L) function which provides up to 2.2 kW.
