Astronaut
In other countries, you may be called a cosmonaut or an astronaut, but in Sweden, we say, astronaut.
An astronaut conducts manned spaceflight programs and is trained to command or be a crew member of spacecraft. Suitable previous background is, for example, a pilot combined with university studies in physics and astronomy.
ESA’s requirements when recruiting for astronaut training :
- You must be a citizen of a member country of the ESA (European Space Agency)
- You should preferably be between 27 and 37 years old
- You must be between 153 and 190 centimeters tall
- You must have good knowledge of English
- You must have a university or college education in either natural science, technology, or medicine
- You must have at least 3 years of work experience related to previous studies
- Meritorious if you have training and experience working as a pilot
- You must be in good health, have a normal body weight, and be in good physical shape
- It is also important that you are mentally and emotionally stable
- Personal qualities that are in demand include a good memory, a good ability to concentrate, that you are good at reasoning and quickly make difficult operational decisions, that you are motivated, flexible and empathetic
Training
The backgrounds of those who have so far been allowed to go into space have been very varied. What they have in common, however, is that they have a basic science or technical education.
University education at the master’s or doctoral level is a suitable basis for being eligible for work as an astronaut. It is important to be well-educated and knowledgeable in scientific or technical fields.
The astronaut candidate must demonstrate outstanding knowledge and practical abilities in appropriate areas.
Educations that are considered meritorious are natural science education, e.g. physics, biology, chemistry, or geology, education in medicine, civil engineering education such as technical physics, or education in mathematics or information technology.
You can apply on academic merits or as a pilot on merits linked to flying experience and aircraft handling.
Good language skills in English are a prerequisite and language skills in Russian are meritorious.
Pilot training/pilot’s license, diver’s license, and military service are meritorious. In the selection process, two psychological examinations are carried out.
A good upper secondary education is available in, among other things, the Natural Sciences program.
Personal Characteristics
To be able to become an astronaut, one must also be socially open, good at cooperating, mentally stable, completely healthy, have perfect vision and hearing and have normal color vision.
Other personal qualities that are in demand include a good memory, a good ability to concentrate, that you are good reasoning and quickly making difficult operational decisions, that you are motivated, flexibility, and empathetic.
