Fielding Some More Questions About Airsoft Guns

It seriously looks like there’s some wild disinformation out there regarding airsoft guns.

Let’s level the playing field and set the record straight once and for all.

Are Airsoft Guns or BB Guns Better?
This one’s a doozy. How airsoft guns and BB guns (or air guns, for that matter) ever got lumped into the same category is beyond us. Perhaps it’s because some airsoft guns use compressed gas to fire pellets, but that’s about where the similarity ends.

Airsoft guns are replicas that use either compressed gas (called green gas or CO2),  springs, or electrical motors to fire plastic pellets or BBs. Airsoft guns are not intended as weapons and when used for responsible, sporting purposes (such as MilSim or airsoft events) are not dangerous.

Air guns use compressed air under much higher pressure to fire special, dense metallic air gun ammo, typically round BBs, pointed or hollow-pointed pellets, at much higher velocities.

Air guns (of which BB guns are a type), since they fire heavier, denser pellets at much higher velocities, can be very dangerous when used irresponsibly.

Air guns are typically used for competitive target practice or for hunting, as they deliver enough energy to easily dispatch small game.

They are not the same, so one is not better than the other. They are used for totally different purposes as described above.

How Fast Do Airsoft Guns Shoot?
The fastest high-quality airsoft guns can shoot somewhere around 500 FPS (perhaps a bit higher) depending on the power of the motor, the weight of the BB, and a few other factors.

However, most other airsoft guns shoot at muzzle velocities in the area of 280-410 FPS. Again, this depends on the power and style of the motor, the weight of the BB, and a few other factors.

In the case of gas blowback airsoft guns, the temperature can also have an effect on FPS rating, and in the case of spring-powered airsoft guns, the type of spring used can also affect shot power.

Can a 10-Year-Old Play Airsoft?
There is no minimum age requirement for playing airsoft. However, specific airsoft even organizations set their own rules and regulations for who can play, what is allowed, and so on and so forth.

So, while a 10-year-old might be allowed to play airsoft, there might be some additional rules. For instance, some airsoft event organizers require airsoft players under the age of 18 to wear full face masks as protection.

Check with the event organizer to be certain.

Is Playing Airsoft Painful?
If you get shot at close range by a powerful airsoft gun shooting heavy BBs then, yes, it’ll sting a bit. But it won’t knock you out!

Most airsoft players wear heavy vests, clothing, and gloves that take all the pain out of playing airsoft.

Moreover, events require players to wear either goggles or full face masks for protection, which protect your eyes – which are most at risk of being injured when playing airsoft.

What Protective Gear Do You Need to Play Airsoft?
Airsoft events will not let you participate unless you have eye protection, and some require full face masks.

However, it is also a wise idea to wear protective, heavy footwear, gloves, long pants, and a jacket to protect yourself.
