Monopoly rules
A game about real estate for 2 – 8 participants. These are the official Monopoly rules. At the bottom of the page, you will also find a PDF with the original rules, ready for download or printing.
The goal of the game
Monopoly involves buying, renting or selling real estate in the most advantageous way possible.
The winner is the player who becomes the owner of the entire city or who, at the end of the game, is the richest and owns the most.
Before the game
1. Place the playing board on a table and place the chance cards and common cards in the indicated places in the middle of the playing board. Each player then chooses a game piece – among these are, for example, a car, a dog, an iron, and a hat.
2. One of the participants is appointed banker/banker and keeps track of the bank money during the game. The banker then distributes SEK 30,000 to each player in the following denominations: two 10,000 notes, three 2,000 notes, two 1,000 notes, two 500 notes, six 100 notes, six 50 notes, and five 20 notes. The rest of the money belongs to the bank until further notice.
3. To decide who goes first, each player rolls both dice once each. Whoever gets the highest sum (you add up the value of the two dice, max 12p) must start playing. He places his game piece on the “GO” square.
General rules
You move your pieces around the playing field depending on how many steps the two dice show. When you end up on a plot, which is not owned by another player, you can buy the plot from the bank. The price of the plot is indicated on the playing field.
(However, if the player does not want to buy the lot, the banker must hold an auction for it. The player who bids the highest gets to buy the lot.) = we have never used these rules. It has only been allowed to buy a plot of land that you have found yourself on.
If one of the players owns the plot that someone else ends up on, they must collect rent. The rent is significantly increased if the plot has a house or hotel. If a player is in a financial crunch, he can mortgage a plot of land, which he owns, in the bank.
If a player ends up on common or chance , he must take a card in the piles that are in the center of the playing field. The player has to do what the card says. Even go to jail if the card says so.
The bank / Banker
Choose a player to manage the bank. The banker takes care of all money, deeds, auctions and houses/hotels.
The course of the game
The first player rolls the dice and moves his piece as many steps as the dice show. The game runs clockwise. Several pieces may be on the same square.
Once a player rolls the dice and moves his game piece, he can stay on
1. Chance or General
2. a vacant lot, which he can buy or just pass by
3. an owned lot, to which he must pay rent
4. in prison, either as a prisoner or as a visitor
During the course of the game, the players walk around the playing field several times.
Double punch
If a player hits an “equal” number on the dice – for example, 2 deuces – he gets to hit again. However, the player must first, as usual, move the total number of steps indicated by the dice and follow the instructions associated with the square he lands on. Then he gets to hit one more time.
Penalty
If a player hits “even” three times in a row (which doesn’t happen very often) he may not move his piece any further. Instead, he is forced to go straight to the prison box.
