Idaho

Idaho is the place to go if you want to see unspoiled natural beauty. In the cold season it has spectacular skiing and during the warmer months it really has glistening waterfalls. We had no idea there were so many amazing things to do in Idaho until we went! The American Southwest’s adventures and landscapes would take my breath away.

1. Shoshone Falls

The riverside Art Museum of Eastern Idaho and the Museum of Idaho in downtown Idaho Falls are two of the city’s most popular attractions. The Idaho Potato Museum in Blackfoot, outside Idaho Falls, is one of the more unusual things to do in Idaho. The museum, which is in a former train depot with a cafe and gift shop, has exhibits on the history and cultivation of potatoes in Idaho.

2. Bruneau Dunes State Park

Bruneau Dunes State Park, famous for its sand dunes, is also located on the state’s southwestern border. In fact, it is home to North America’s tallest freestanding sand dune, which stands at 470 feet. When you explore this park, you won’t believe you’re still in America, let alone Idaho. It’s a great place to go hiking, climb the dunes, or even sandboard down them. The park also has lakes that are with bass and bluegill, making it ideal for those who enjoy fishing. You can also camp in the park’s campgrounds or gaze up at the night sky from Idaho’s only public observatory, which is within the park.

3. Yellowstone Bear World

Yellowstone Bear World is a must-see if you’re looking for things to do in Idaho in the spring or summer. It’s a drive-thru zoo and petting zoo (don’t worry, no bears are petted!) with kiddie rides. It’s in Grand Teton National Park, close to Yellowstone, and it’s a great way to see bears in a wild park. If you missed seeing these elusive bears, this is your last chance.

4. Henrys Lake State Park

I’m sorry we didn’t spend more time at this beautiful mountain lake near West Yellowstone. Henrys Lake State Park is in a bowl at 6,470 feet in elevation, surrounded by 10,000-foot peaks. We arrived late in the evening after driving from Sun Valley to Mesa Falls, and we only stayed one night at the RV park. The sunrise colours and views the next morning were breathtaking, and the stop we made before crossing into Montana was well worth it. For these colours, no filter is required. Fishing for large trout is very popular at Henrys Lake State Park.

5. Mesa Falls

On our way from Sun Valley to West Yellowstone, I discovered my favourite waterfall in the United States thus far. And I’m surprised I only found out about this Idaho waterfall a week before going. Lower Mesa Falls as well as Upper Mesa Falls are two breathtaking waterfalls just on Snake River’s Henrys Fork inside the Great Targhee Forest. It was the first time my girls had been so close to such a powerful waterfall, and they were away. Upper Mesa Falls has a short boardwalk that takes you close to the falls and provides several viewpoints.

6. City of Rocks National Reserve

The City of Rocks is a massive 14,407-acre national reserve. It was emigrant James F. Wilkens, who named the park after the spectacular geological formations he saw in the area, hence the name “City of Rocks. Geologists estimate that the park’s oldest granite rock is more than 2.5 billion years old. It’s a beautifully scenic and geologic area, perfect for hiking, camping, and skiing in the winter. In the park, you can also go mountain biking or horseback riding.

7. Moon National Monument

Going to drive in and out of Southern Idaho’s Volcanoes of a Moon National Monument. The desert landscape’s striking rainbow colours faded into the black hardened rock of the lava fields. On our travels across the United States, from Hawaii to Bend, Oregon, we learned a lot about volcanoes. Craters of the Moon expands on that education. to the southeast, thanks to a few informative displays in the visitor centre.
